Paring (for Corns and Calluses)
What’s the Procedure:
Paring is a simple dermatological procedure used to remove thickened, dead skin layers of corns or calluses, providing relief from pain and pressure.
Mechanism:
Using a sterile scalpel or dermatological blade, the hardened and dead skin over the corn or callus is carefully shaved down to reduce bulk and pain. Sometimes combined with keratolytic creams or occlusive dressings for better results.
Indications:
Painful corns or calluses
Plantar warts (initial diagnosis and relief)
Pressure-related thickened skin over feet or toes
Recurrent shoe-bite areas
Anaesthesia Required or Not:
Usually not required. Topical numbing may be used in sensitive cases.
Painful or Not:
Generally painless unless the corn is deep. Patients usually feel relief after the procedure.
What to Expect from the Treatment:
Immediate pain relief
Recurrence is possible if the root cause (ill-fitting footwear, pressure point) is not corrected
Follow-up may involve orthotic advice, medicated pads, or foot care education
Who Can Do:
Any individual with painful corns or thickened skin over pressure points. Diabetics need careful evaluation.
When It Can Be Done:
Any time of year. Best done before prolonged standing, travel, or festivities.
