Excimer Laser (for Psoriasis, Vitiligo, Atopic Dermatitis, Prurigo nodularis etc)
What’s the Procedure:
Excimer laser is a targeted ultraviolet (UVB 308 nm) laser used to treat localized skin conditions like vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis etc with high precision, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy skin.
Mechanism:
The laser emits monochromatic UVB light, which helps in immunosuppression (for psoriasis or eczema) or stimulates melanocyte migration and proliferation (in vitiligo). Because it’s highly focused, only diseased areas are treated, sparing healthy tissue.
Indications:
Localized vitiligo (especially face, neck, hands)
Stable segmental vitiligo
Psoriasis plaques (especially resistant or hard-to-treat areas like elbows, knees, scalp)
Chronic atopic dermatitis
Alopecia areata (in select cases)
Anaesthesia Required or Not:
No anesthesia required.
Painful or Not:
Not painful. Patients may feel mild warmth or tingling.
What to Expect from the Treatment:
Requires multiple sessions (2–3 times/week for several weeks)
Visible repigmentation in vitiligo in 8–10 sessions
Psoriasis lesions flatten and reduce in redness over time
Minimal side effects; may include mild redness, dryness, or tanning
Who Can Do:
Adults and children with localized stable vitiligo or psoriasis. Not for widespread or unstable disease.
When It Can Be Done:
Any time of the year. Sun protection is essential during treatment.
